Islamic law addresses the financial responsibilities of divorced parents towards their children. Specifically, the father is obligated to provide sustenance, clothing, and lodging for the child for a period of two years while the mother continues to breastfeed. This obligation remains even after divorce, and the father’s estate is responsible if he passes away. Mutual agreement between parents allows for alternatives, such as weaning the child earlier and utilizing a wet nurse, provided it is done through consultation and without coercion of the mother. The Quran emphasizes equitable treatment of children and highlights that Allah is aware of all actions.
