The medieval period in Europe was characterized by severe intellectual stagnation. The Papacy imposed a dictatorial system, prohibiting the study of science and philosophy. Discovery of philosophical texts resulted in execution. This repression led to a powerful reaction, exceeding moderation, once restrictions eased. The resulting freedom of thought in science and philosophy went to extremes. This was fundamentally a reaction against the severe restrictions imposed by the Papal system, creating a rejection of religion and fostering diverse philosophical schools of thought.
