Following the martyrdom of Ali, Hasan bin Ali became the Caliph, but faced internal conflict. He ultimately negotiated a peace treaty with Muawiyah, relinquishing the caliphate to establish stability and end civil war. This decision, while controversial, brought twenty years of peace and allowed for the expansion of the Islamic empire towards Central Asia and the Byzantine territories. Dr. Israr Ahmad explains that Hasan’s caliphate is considered ‘Rashid’ (rightly guided), while Muawiyah’s is viewed differently due to the manner in which he gained power. The lecture details the political landscape of the time, the significance of Hasan’s peace treaty, and the subsequent expansion under Muawiyah's rule, including naval advancements and reaching the walls of Constantinople.
