Surah Al-Asr is among the shortest chapters of the Quran, consisting of only three verses. It is also among the earliest revealed chapters. The Quranic style, as described in Surah Hud, is to first establish firm principles and then elaborate upon them, originating from the All-Wise, All-Knowing. This lecture by Dr. Israr Ahmad explores the significance of Surah Al-Asr and its message of time, loss, and the importance of faith and righteous deeds.
The Quran was not revealed all at once, but gradually over a period of time. This approach served multiple purposes. It allowed people to comprehend and internalize the teachings progressively, fostering deeper understanding and personal transformation. The gradual revelation accommodated the capacity of the audience, ensuring they could reflect upon and integrate the message into their lives. This method facilitated a lasting impact on their intellect, mindset, and overall character. The Quranic verse (Surah Bani Israel 106) explicitly states this intentional fragmentation to aid in recitation and comprehension.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked about the most excellent form of *jihad*. He responded that the greatest *jihad* is the struggle against one’s own base desires (*nafs*) in obedience to God. This involves suppressing harmful inclinations, humbling oneself before God, and striving for spiritual purification. This internal struggle is superior to fighting in the path of God.
The core of a person’s character lies in their priorities: worldly possessions or the afterlife. True faith demands prioritizing the hereafter and seeking Allah’s pleasure above all else. Sufficient provision, even if modest, is superior to excessive wealth that leads to spiritual negligence. Self-sufficiency and reliance on Allah are preferable to a life of abundance and detachment from the Divine. A life of modest means, free from dependence on others, is more virtuous than a life of luxury that breeds spiritual heedlessness. Prioritizing contentment over excess fosters a stronger connection with Allah.
The text addresses the question of resurrection and the origin of life, arguing that if a creator initially fashioned existence from humble beginnings, replicating that creation is demonstrably easier the second time. It posits that the initial act of creation is the most challenging, while subsequent iterations are simplified. The argument extends to all of creation—from scientists like Einstein and Newton to prophets and saints—all originating from the same source and thus potentially recreatable.
This lecture details the stages of human development from conception to old age, emphasizing the divine process governing life. It outlines creation from a sperm, its development into an embryo, then a fetus, followed by growth and maturity. The lecture acknowledges that some individuals are taken before reaching full potential, while others experience a decline in cognitive function with age, forgetting what they once knew. It reflects on the cyclical nature of life and the ultimate return to the Divine.
