The enigmatic opening letters found in 29 Surahs of the Quran, known as *huruf muqatta'at*, have been a subject of scholarly debate for centuries. Their precise meaning remains unknown except to Allah and His Messenger. These letters, often compared to coded messages, are not read as connected letters but as individual units. While some scholars have attempted to derive meanings from them, the consensus remains that their true significance is beyond human comprehension. The Arabic alphabet comprises 28 or 29 letters, depending on whether *alif lam* and *ha mim* are considered separate or joined. One interpretation, attributed to Abdullah ibn Abbas, suggests these letters represent a condensed form of the phrase *ana Allah a'lam* (I am Allah, I know), but this view is not widely accepted by Quranic commentators. Analysis of their distribution within the Quran may reveal further insights.
