057-AL-BAQARAH (Ayat 178-182)
Islamic jurisprudence addresses the concept of retribution (Qisas) in cases of murder, emphasizing equality in punishment – life for life. While pre-Islamic customs varied regarding blood money and distinctions between free men and slaves, Islamic law establishes equality among all believers. Forgiveness is permissible, with the victim’s heirs having the sole authority to grant it, either accepting blood money or offering unconditional pardon. This act fosters reconciliation and breaks cycles of vengeance. The Quran also outlines rules for inheritance, initially requiring generosity towards parents and relatives, later superseded by a comprehensive inheritance law in Surah An-Nisa. Provisions are made for testamentary gifts, with limitations on the amount and recipients, emphasizing fairness and adherence to Islamic principles. Any alteration to a will after it has been declared bears the responsibility of the modifier.
