The concept of Iman (faith) is beautifully illustrated in the Quran through the metaphor of a lamp within a niche, fueled by blessed olive oil. This radiance, akin to a shining star, represents the activation of inherent spiritual awareness through divine revelation. The Quranic verses describe a light that is neither eastern nor western, signifying a pure and unadulterated source of illumination. Just as clarified olive oil provides a consistent and bright flame, the light of faith, when ignited by wahy (revelation), dispels darkness and guides the believer. This analogy highlights the difference between those with readily receptive natures – likened to oil that easily catches fire – and those who require effort and purification to attain spiritual understanding. The illuminated heart, described as a ‘mishkat’ (niche), becomes a beacon of faith, offering constant remembrance of Allah through acts of worship. The Quran emphasizes that Allah guides with His light whomever He wills and provides examples for humankind, demonstrating His complete knowledge of all things. This profound metaphor serves as a potent illustration of the interplay between innate human potential and divine guidance.
