The initial years of Islam in Mecca were marked by significant persecution and hardship for the nascent Muslim community. Following the commencement of the Prophet's invitation, a period of three years passed with limited opposition from the Quraysh. However, as the faith gained traction, particularly among slaves and youth – including figures like Yasir, Uthman ibn Affan, and Su'ad ibn Abi Waqas – the Quraysh responded with increased hostility. This escalated from verbal abuse and ridicule to physical violence, imprisonment, and the targeting of vulnerable groups like enslaved individuals, who had no legal protections. Notable instances included the torture of Bilal ibn Rabah, Yasir, and Sumayyah bint Khabbat, with Sumayyah becoming the first martyr in Islam. The trials faced by early Muslims are detailed in Surah Al-Mu'minun, highlighting the resilience and faith demonstrated amidst intense adversity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged patience and foretold even greater tribulations faced by those who came before, reminding his followers that enduring hardship is integral to the path of faith.
