Revelation, in Islamic theology, is the act of Allah communicating with humanity through chosen messengers. This communication takes several forms, including inspiration (Ilham), dreams (Ru'ya), and direct conveyance (Wahi). Wahi, the most significant form of revelation, is further categorized into two primary modes: Inzal and Tanzil. Inzal refers to the sending down of the entire Quran as a complete text to the lowest heaven (Bayt al-'Izzah). Tanzil, conversely, denotes the gradual, piecemeal revelation of the Quranic verses (Ayah) to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over a period of approximately 23 years. Understanding the distinction between these two processes is crucial for comprehending the Quran's preservation and transmission. The meticulous process of both Inzal and Tanzil ensured the Quran’s integrity and its accurate conveyance to humankind, serving as a complete guide for all of humanity. These concepts are central to understanding the divine origin and authority of the Quran.
