The opening verses of Surah Ar-Rum detail a historical conflict between the Roman and Persian empires, alongside a significant prophecy. For centuries, these two superpowers engaged in cyclical warfare, with dominance shifting between them. The Romans, centered in Europe, controlled territories including parts of modern-day Turkey and the Mediterranean coast. The Persians, with a vast empire originating from Cyrus the Great, held sway over much of the Middle East. During the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), around 614 CE, the Persians achieved a decisive victory over the Romans in Syria, pushing them to the brink. However, this situation reversed unexpectedly within a few years, as the Romans launched a counteroffensive and decisively defeated the Persians. This fulfillment of the Quranic prophecy, revealed around 623 CE, coincided with the early years of Islam and was seen as a sign of divine guidance. The victory was particularly impactful for the early Muslims, as the Romans were Christians, and the Persians were Zoroastrian polytheists. The Quran highlights this shift as a demonstration of Allah’s power and His promise to support those who believe.
