The Battle of Ahzab, also known as the Confederation, was a significant trial for the early Muslim community in Medina. In 5 AH, a coalition of twelve thousand troops, including the Quraysh and their allies, besieged the city. Medina’s defenders numbered only three thousand, complicated by the presence of hypocrites and the wavering loyalty of the Jewish tribe, Banu Qurayza. Facing severe shortages of supplies and harsh winter conditions, the Muslims dug trenches – a novel defensive tactic. This siege tested the faith of believers, exposing the insincerity of the hypocrites. Allah distinguished the truthful from the deceitful, fulfilling His promise to reveal their true natures as mentioned in Surah Al-Ankabut. The battle witnessed acts of courage, such as Ali ibn Abi Talib’s duel with Amr ibn Abd Wudd, and divine intervention in the form of a powerful wind and unseen angelic reinforcements, ultimately leading to the retreat of the confederate forces. This event showcased the resilience of the Muslim community and the manifestation of Allah’s support.
