Bi'at Aqaba refers to the pledges made to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by the people of Medina, marking a pivotal moment in the early history of Islam. Initially, the Prophet ﷺ received pledges of faith (Iman) from those who accepted Islam, but these were not formalized with the people of Mecca. Formal declarations or symbolic acts were absent there. Instead, a pledge occurred with those who came from outside Medina. The two Bi'at Aqaba—the first and the second—eventually led to the formation of a cohesive community. The second Bi'at Aqaba, in particular, established the framework for this structure. Its terms, as authentically narrated, involved a commitment to listen and obey the Prophet ﷺ in both ease and hardship, and to prioritize his commands over personal desires. This pledge extended to supporting designated leaders and upholding truth, regardless of location. This commitment mirrored the organizational structure of an army, with a commander-in-chief and subordinate commanders. This system was essential for maintaining order and effectiveness. The community pledged to speak the truth everywhere, and upon final judgment, submit to Allah and His Messenger. The establishment of this community, occurring before the commencement of armed conflict, signified a transition from passive resistance to active organization, solidifying the foundations of the early Muslim state.
