The Quranic verse from Surah Al-Hujurat emphasizes that humanity originates from a single male and female – Adam and Eve – and is subsequently divided into nations and tribes for the purpose of mutual recognition, not superiority. This division into diverse groups, based on ethnicity, lineage, language, and appearance, is intended to facilitate identification and understanding amongst people. The verse explicitly rejects any notion of inherent racial or tribal hierarchy, affirming that true distinction lies solely in *taqwa* (piety and righteousness). Historically, this principle of equality was unprecedented. While concepts of human fraternity had been articulated previously, Muhammad (peace be upon him) established a society founded upon these ideals for the first time. Even critics acknowledge this, noting that his establishment of a society based on equality and freedom marked a significant moment in history. This foundational principle, as highlighted in his final sermon during Hajj, underscores the importance of recognizing shared humanity and judging individuals based on their character and devotion to Allah.
