The Quran highlights the differing merits of those who contributed wealth and fought for the cause of Islam before and after the Conquest. Early contributions, made during a period of Islamic weakness, hold a particularly high status. This is because giving in charity and risking one’s life in battle were far more challenging when the Muslim community lacked power and resources. Later contributions, while still commendable, are understood within the context of increased strength and stability. The concept of ‘infaq’ extends beyond monetary giving to encompass sacrifice of one’s self, particularly through striving in the way of Allah. This selfless dedication is emphasized as a supreme act of devotion, with those who give of their lives in the path of Allah receiving the highest reward. Furthermore, the Quran stresses that dedicating one's abilities and potential is a form of wealth expenditure, comparable to earning through labor.
