The distinction between a prophet (Nabi) and a messenger (Rasul) lies in their assigned missions. A prophet is appointed to deliver a message to a specific people or place, remaining a prophet until the mission is fulfilled. Once a mission is assigned, the individual becomes a Rasul, an emissary acting with Allah’s direct authority. Obedience to the Rasul is thus obedience to Allah. This concept highlights that a messenger’s directives are not personal preferences, but divine commands. Furthermore, accountability for sins differs; Allah may forgive transgressions against His rights, but offenses against others require restitution—either through compensation or the transference of good deeds. The appointed time for a collective fate is immutable; once Allah decrees, there is no postponement. Recognizing this underscores the importance of fulfilling one’s responsibilities and striving for righteousness while there is still time.
