The initial revelation of the Quran involved recitation during the night, particularly before the establishment of the five daily prayers. Early Muslims engaged in extended periods of qiyam, dedicating much of the night to prayer and contemplation. This practice, rooted in Surah al-Muzzammil, emphasized continuous remembrance of Allah through prostration and praise. While the five daily prayers eventually formalized worship, the voluntary night prayer (tahajjud) retained significance, especially for the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), becoming akin to an additional obligatory act. The Quran highlights a preference for worldly comforts among some, contrasting it with the focus on the afterlife as seen in Surah al-Qiyamah. This inclination towards immediate gratification is juxtaposed with the inevitable reckoning and the consequences of actions. Allah created humanity and tested them, and He has the power to replace generations, but He also remembers the foundations He established. This serves as a reminder to choose a path towards the Divine and recognize that all volition ultimately lies with Allah, the All-Knowing and All-Wise.
