Tazkiyah, or self-purification, is a central theme in Islamic teachings, representing the process of refining the soul and fostering spiritual growth. The Quran emphasizes the importance of remembrance (dhikr) as a means of prompting those inclined towards reflection, while acknowledging that those indifferent will not benefit. This process strengthens faith and increases knowledge for believers. The Quran also highlights the fate of the wretched, who actively turn away from reminders and ultimately face the fire of the hereafter. The verses describe a state beyond death or life, a complete and irreversible consequence for the disbelievers. True success lies in achieving tazkiyah—purifying the soul—as Allah created humankind in the most excellent form, yet destined to descend to the lowest of the low. This requires diligent effort, controlling passions, and strengthening the spirit through practices like fasting and prayer. The Friday sermons, traditionally serving as reminders, mirror this concept of tazkiyah, with early attendees receiving greater spiritual reward. The emphasis is on the meaning, not just the language, of divine guidance. The ultimate aim is to prioritize the afterlife over worldly desires, recognizing that worldly benefits are fleeting while the rewards of the hereafter are eternal.
