This lecture defines revolution, differentiating between general change and fundamental shifts within political or socioeconomic systems. It explains that while any alteration can be termed a change, a true revolution necessitates a systemic transformation. The French Revolution altered the political structure, replacing monarchy with democracy, and the Bolshevik Revolution transformed the economic system from private to public ownership. However, the widespread conversion of the Roman Empire to Christianity, while significant, wasn't a revolution because it didn’t change the underlying systemic structure. A revolution requires a fundamental, not merely superficial, change to a core system.
