Islam does not permit self-annihilation but allows for self-control. Historical ascetic practices in various religions involved suppressing the self through extreme hardship, as seen in Hindu yogic traditions and Christian monasticism. Islam, however, emphasizes utilizing one's existence responsibly, maintaining control over the self rather than being subjugated by it. The hadith highlights the rights of the self, including providing nourishment, rest, and fulfilling its needs, while simultaneously maintaining control. Temporary abstinence from food or desires is presented as an exercise in self-discipline, not self-destruction.
