Islam emphasizes self-control, not self-annihilation. Asceticism, prevalent in other religions, involves suppressing desires entirely. Islam acknowledges the rights of the self, spouse, and community. Dr. Israr Ahmad explains that denying these rights is akin to Pharaoh’s absolute control, leading to spiritual arrogance. True spirituality involves channeling desires constructively for personal growth and achieving higher goals. Uncontrolled desires, however, lead to sin and spiritual ruin. The self can be a powerful ally or a destructive force, depending on whether it is governed by reason and faith.
