Quranic Divisions - Dr Israr Ahmad
This lecture discusses the historical development of divisions within the Quran. Initially, the Quran was divided into sections for recitation during weekly completions (khatam). These sections, totaling seven, were approximately equal in length. Later, during the time of Hajjaj ibn Yusuf, the Quran was divided into *ruku* (sections) to facilitate easier recitation within a single prayer cycle. This division aimed to ensure thematic coherence within each *ruku*, preventing abrupt stops mid-sentence. The speaker notes that while generally well-executed, some *ruku* divisions could have benefitted from adjustments to align with the flow of meaning. This discussion sheds light on the evolution of Quranic organization and its impact on recitation practices.
