This lecture clarifies the foundational purpose of fasting in Islam. The obligation of fasting wasn't introduced with Islam; it was a practice present in previous faiths, including Judaism and Christianity. However, Islamic fasting differs in its specific regulations, offering greater flexibility. While previous faiths imposed restrictions throughout the entirety of a designated day—Sabbath for Jews, Sunday for Christians—Islamic law permits activity after prayer. The ultimate goal of fasting is the development of *taqwa*—God-consciousness—and a sincere connection with divine guidance.
