Fasting (Sawm) transcends mere physical abstinence. It is a deliberate exercise in self-discipline, but unlike self-imposed restrictions, it is an act of obedience to God. The purpose of abstaining from food, drink, and marital relations during fasting is not personal preference but divine command. This practice strengthens the self (Nafs) while simultaneously submitting it to God’s will, fostering restraint, obedience, and ultimately, spiritual growth. The core of this discipline lies in cultivating *taqwa* (God-consciousness) through the act of worship.
