This lecture explains the Sufi orders of Qadriya and Chishtiya, clarifying their origins as methods for fostering sincerity and a spiritual connection with God. These orders developed specific practices of remembrance (dhikr) and spiritual disciplines. Initially, these methods aligned with the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) teachings on spiritual refinement. However, with the advent of monarchies, access to the original path was restricted. Sufi masters then developed alternative practices like different forms of dhikr, meditation, and seclusion. Each respected scholar established a unique system, leading to the formation of distinct orders like Qadriya (founded by Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani), Naqshbandiya (founded by Bahawuddin Naqshband), and Chishtiya. Similar to the development of different schools of Islamic jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) based on the interpretations of Imams Abu Hanifa, Shafi’i, and others, these Sufi orders represent diverse approaches to spiritual realization. The Qadriya, Naqshbandiya, Chishtiya, and Suhrawardiya are among the most well-known, though many other orders exist.
