The word ‘Soom’ originally denoted refraining from basic needs like food and water, historically associated with Arabian horses trained for swift raids and endurance. These horses were deliberately kept hungry and thirsty to build resilience for long journeys across harsh terrains. Arabian riders protected themselves from scorching winds by covering their heads and directing the horses into the wind, conditioning them to withstand hardship. This practice of self-denial and endurance formed the linguistic and cultural backdrop from which the Quran adopted the term ‘Soom’ to signify fasting as an act of worship, representing a spiritual journey of self-discipline and devotion.
