Tarawih History & Practice - Dr Israr Ahmad

This lecture details the historical development of Tarawih prayers. It clarifies that Tarawih was not practiced as a congregational prayer during the Prophet’s time or the era of Abu Bakr. The practice began during Umar's caliphate with twenty rak’ahs after Isha. Dr. Ahmad explains that while the Prophet offered eight rak’ahs of Tahajjud, linking Tarawih to that practice is historically inaccurate. He highlights the consensus among the four major schools of thought (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, Hanbali) and contrasts this with the recent innovation of the Ahl-e-Hadith. The lecture also discusses the practice of Qiyam-ul-Layl (night vigil) in the Haramain Sharifain, where a complete Quran recitation is often completed alongside the Tarawih prayers, and emphasizes adherence to the Sunnah of the Prophet and the rightly guided Caliphs.
