When the Prophet Muhammad arrived in Medina, he observed that the Jewish community fasted on the tenth of Muharram (Ashura), commemorating the day the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh and his army. They explained this was a day of thanksgiving. The Prophet stated that Muslims, as followers of Moses, had a greater right to commemorate this event. He instructed Muslims to fast on both the ninth and tenth of Muharram to distinguish themselves from the Jews, who only fasted on the tenth. This practice marks the beginning of observing days of worship based on the traditions of earlier communities present in Medina.
Hazrat Ali (RA) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) foretold of a great tribulation (fitna). When asked about the means of salvation, the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated that the Quran is the source of guidance. It contains accounts of those who came before and those who will come after, and holds the solutions to all disputes and differences.

The Quran was revealed over a period of twenty-two years, equivalent to approximately 610-632 CE. The initial revelations were short verses, with many of the shortest surahs appearing first. The revelation occurred gradually, piece by piece. The commonly stated twenty-three-year period refers to the lunar calendar, while modern understanding often relies on the solar calendar.
