This lecture clarifies that true piety (taqwa) extends beyond mere ritualistic observance – prayers, fasting, avoiding forbidden foods. It emphasizes abstaining from unjustly acquiring wealth, avoiding deceptive practices, and not using wealth to influence authorities for personal gain. Genuine piety involves a commitment to ethical financial conduct and a sincere avoidance of all forms of injustice. It highlights that simply performing religious duties without inner sincerity and righteous conduct does not constitute true taqwa.
Human sovereignty is fundamentally flawed and unacceptable in Islam. True authority and governance belong solely to Allah. Any claim to sovereignty by individuals, whether pharaohs or tyrants, represents impurity and disbelief. The concept of human rule is akin to a massive, pervasive filth that cannot be cleansed, even if distributed across all of society. Islamic monotheism (Tawhid) centers on recognizing Allah as the ultimate and only sovereign.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) observed Tarawih prayers individually for only three nights, leading an eight-rak’ah congregation. He performed these prayers after the Tahajjud prayers. The practice of offering twenty rak’ahs in congregation did not exist during the Prophet’s era or the caliphate of Abu Bakr. It began during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab, who standardized the practice after observing fragmented congregations in the mosque. He instituted a system of twenty rak’ahs to be performed immediately after Isha, led by a single imam.
Supplication (du'a) should be directed solely to Allah. Seeking help from anyone other than Allah – be it prophets, messengers, angels, saints, or any created being – nullifies the act of worship. While seeking physical assistance within the natural laws of the world is permissible, requesting the unseen or miraculous from anyone besides Allah is strictly forbidden. True supplication involves asking Allah alone for all needs, both material and spiritual. Seeking aid from others in worldly matters is different from asking for the impossible or supernatural from anyone besides the Creator.
