Human beings inherently seek to reassure their conscience, even those seemingly immersed in wrongdoing. This lecture explores the universal need to perform some act of goodness, offering a psychological solace amidst a life potentially dominated by negativity. The poet’s verse highlights how a continuous self-deception—finding justification in minor acts while overlooking greater failings—is essential for sustaining life, allowing individuals to cope with their inherent imperfections. The name Ramadan originates from the intense heat that once prevailed in Arabia, causing hardship and even death. People perceived this time as one where purification occurred naturally. The month of Ramadan was thus associated with cleansing and seen as a period where accumulated impurities within the human body were naturally eliminated. The practice of fasting was ordained by God to facilitate this process. Another interpretation connects the name Ramadan to one of God’s names, signifying ‘the month of God.’ This is supported by a tradition of the Prophet Muhammad, who identified Sha’ban as his month and Ramadan as God’s month.

This world is fundamentally incomplete from the perspective of moral law. Physical laws operate with absolute certainty – transgression leads to consequence. However, moral failings, like lying or theft, often go unpunished in this life. This creates an inherent imbalance. A complete moral order, and the corresponding consequences for actions, necessitates another world, another existence where justice prevails.
